Counselling and Psychotherapy are for me similar activities. Counselling is usually for less time and Psychotherapy is usually a deeper process looking at the causes, which underlie someone's issues. For many people seeing someone regularly who can listen to and hold intense and often difficult emotions can be invaluable. The relationship that develops between client and therapist is very important, it can provide safety, allow trust to develop and healing. Research into the effectiveness of counselling consistently shows that the most important factor for therapeutic change is the relationship between client and counsellor. Counselling and Psychotherapy are useful tools for working through painful experiences from our past. They also provide useful tools for learning about ourselves in the present. When we can see and understand our patterns and behaviours we can have more choice and freedom in our lives. We can also develop resources and strengths such as generosity and compassion towards ourselves. My approach is gentle and supportive. I believe that whatever is currently happening in our lives has a rightness about it, even if it is painful or seemingly destructive. Our problems, our symptoms can be seen as incomplete attempts to change and grow, within them are the seeds for a more nourishing and rewarding life. Some of the issues I have supported people to explore include: self esteem, anxiety, death and bereavement, sexuality, spirituality, relationships, addiction, illness and childhood abuse.
